The mermaid theme is popular this year. This is my third opportunity to decorate with the mermaid theme. The cake is red velvet with cream cheese frosting and the cupcakes are vanilla with butter cream frosting.
This Moana cake was made for a birthday party. It’s made with 36 cupcakes, 12 each of red velvet, chocolate, and vanilla. The frosting is butter cream and the flowers and leaves are all hand made with butter cream frosting. The lettering is made of strawberry flavored candy melts.
I should have waited until the batter was cooked before getting excited about the color. After the cake cooked, it looked more green than blue. So I went to the internet for help. I found that oil and eggs have a yellow color which was making this change from blue to green. Well I don’t think I want a cake without eggs so my options were to use shortening which is white instead of oil or make the dark blue cake. I tried the dark blue recipe which used royal blue and violet food color and decided to go with this instead.
I guess I lost this match but I am still in the game and will try to get the Tiffany blue velvet again at a later time.
I have tried 4 times to get the basic red velvet cake to a nice tiffany blue color. It’s amazing how the internet has so much but still can fall short sometimes. I also checked You tube and cold not find a recipe that worked. The trick is getting the right shade of food color and figuring out how much to use. I halved my recipe so I would not waste a lot of my baking ingredients.
Finally I achieved the color I wanted. The final project will be posted soon.
